The cemetery at Champigny sur Yonne/La Chapelle Champigny hold the remains of five Airmen of the Karnezis crew who were killed on the Stuttgart mission of September 6, 1943. Madame Bouchy of Champigny suggested the men remain permanently interred in the village cemetery, and after coordination with next of kin and Washington D.C., she received custody of the bodies for permanent burial. A funeral was held on September 6, 1948. Honored to this day are, left to right, S/Sgt. Ray A. Schwabenbauer (Right Waist Gunner), S/Sgt. Ashpy P. Smith (Left Waist Gunner), S/Sgt. Alvin E. Morrison (Ball Turret), T/Sgt. Jean A. Lawrence (Radio Operator), and S/Sgt. George L. Lincoln (Tail Gunner). Each September 6 there is a somber commemoration of their loss.
