388th OSS welcomes new commander

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- The 388th Operations Support Squadron welcomed a new leader during a change of command ceremony here, May 22.  

Lt. Col. Sarah Kercher took command as Lt. Col. Matthew Van Baren transitioned to a new assignment after leading the squadron since May 2023. 

During Van Baren’s command, the 388th OSS supported multiple deployments and F-35 improvement initiatives in support of national defense. 

Kercher takes command after serving as the 388th OSS director of operations since June 2023. 

During her career, Kercher has served as both an enlisted Airman and an officer. She earned her commission the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Michigan State University. Kercher has a diverse background with experience in aerospace medicine, pilot training and flight equipment. She has been working in the F-35 program community for 7 years and previously supported other platforms, including the F-15, T-6, T-1 T-38, KC-135 and C-17.

As commander of the 388th OSS, Kercher will lead a squadron with a diverse mission, supporting two fighter wings, the 388th and 419th. The OSS responsibilities include scheduling and training, aircrew flight equipment, intelligence and cyber support.
